Did he leave me for his ex?

I met a guy on Skype 4 years ago. I was involved at the time and we really liked eachother a lot. He eventually got involved with another girl he met on Skype and he basically told me we could not communicate anymore. He called me 4 months ago out of the blue to ask how i was. He told me he has a child with his girlfriend but they broke up. I broke up with my fiance and we eventually decided to meet for the first time. We met and instantly liked eachother. He works in Mozambique so he had to go back for a month. He eventually came back and went on holiday together. Things were going well from my side. we did a lot together but he was on his phone all the time and i think it was his ex and they were trying to fix things between them. He wasnt always completey honest with me. i could tell. when we got back from our trip he told me that it wasnt working and that we both came out of long relationships. He told me he just wanted to be friends and have fun but he reffered to me as his "girlfriend"?! i would just like to know if he may have gone back to his ex because they have a child together or if he probably just used me as his rebound? this is the second time he has walked out of my life and wonder if he will do it again...
