Switching from a plastic tongue bar to a metal one?

when i got my tongue pierced the piercer did it with a plastic bar, i changed my bar already, just to another plastic one though. Would it be safe if i switched it to a metal bar? After I sterilize it? Also, what should i sterilize it with?
